nea big read logoThe Athens-Clarke County Library announces a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read series exploring Deaf Republic by Ilya Kaminsky. The NEA Big Read in Athens is presented in partnership with the University of Georgia’s College of Education and the Georgia Museum of Art, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Deaf Republic, a critically acclaimed poetry collection, propels the reader forward through a harrowing story in two acts that opens with the shooting of a deaf boy in a public square by occupying soldiers. In protest, the townspeople go deaf, organizing their dissent through puppetry and sign language.

Copies of the book are available at the Information Desk, and community members are encouraged to join one of our library book clubs for discussion:

  • April 20 at 7 p.m. – After the End Book Club with facilitator Shamala Gallagher, in the library
  • April 24 at 7 p.m. – Last Monday Book Club with facilitator Alys Wilman (Zoom event)
  • April 26 at 6:30 p.m.- Overbooked Book Club with facilitator and Athens poet laureate Jeff Fallis; meeting at Viva Argentine, 247 Prince Ave.
  • May 17 at 10:30 a.m. – Talking About Books Book Club with facilitator Alys Wilman, in the library

On May 8 at 7 p.m., author Ilya Kaminsky will read from his work at Buvez, 585 Barber Street. This is an exciting opportunity to meet the award-winning poet.

Many other events will take place during April and May, including including poetry readings, a family day at Georgia Museum of Art and a film screening of the Academy-award-winning film CODA. Visit athenslibrary.org/services/programs/nea-big-read/ for a complete list of events.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
