The Lavonia-Carnegie Library invites the public to join in a day of celebration honoring Andrew Carnegie’s 190th birthday on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
This special event will recognize the incredible legacy of Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American philanthropist whose vision for public libraries transformed communities around the world. Between 1883 and 1929, Carnegie funded the construction of more than 2,500 libraries across the globe — 1,689 of them in the United States alone. These “Carnegie Libraries” became cornerstones of learning, connection, and opportunity for countless people, including right here in Lavonia.
The Lavonia-Carnegie Library, built with a Carnegie grant in 1911, continues to stand as a testament to his enduring belief that access to knowledge should be free and available to all. Over a century later, the library remains a vibrant part of Lavonia’s community life — offering books, digital resources, educational programs, and a welcoming space for people of all ages.
Throughout the celebration on November 25, visitors are encouraged to stop by to learn more about Carnegie’s life and legacy, explore displays highlighting the library’s history, and share their own stories about what the Lavonia-Carnegie Library means to them. Light refreshments will be provided.
The Lavonia-Carnegie Library invites all residents, families, and visitors to join in this celebration of history, generosity, and the enduring power of community libraries.
