Position Summary
Do you like working with children and teenagers? Athens Regional Library System is hiring *TEMPORARY* Children’s and Teen Specialists for the Athens-Clarke County Library Children’s and Teen Services Departments. This position will begin May 27, 2025 and end July 31, 2025. For Teen Services, this temporary position works to oversee and engage teen patrons in activities and programs in the library’s Teen Area. Teen Library Assistants also perform front-line services to patrons of all ages, along with other routine, supportive duties. This position requires dependability, great communication, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library. The ability to start, finish or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital.
For Children’s Services, this temporary position works with the Children’s Services Team to provide front-line services to patrons of all ages in the Children’s Department and performs other supportive duties. This position also shelves library materials in the correct order, shelf-reads to maintain order, and rearranges or shifts the collection as required, so attention to detail is necessary. Position may also assist with children’s programs. Excellent customer service skills, including approachability, patience, and tactfulness are required.
A flexible schedule is required; for teen services, this position will require regular afternoon and some evening hours, since that is when teens are available to attend programs. Occasional weekend programs are also possible. This position reports to the Children’s and Teen Services Coordinators.
Minimum Training and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree or college experience preferred.
- Experience working or volunteering with children or teens required.
- Experience working with the general public required.
- A combination of education, training, and experience that shows evidence of the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.
Essential Job Functions
The following duties are normal expectations, but not all-inclusive. Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments and schedules may change in the future.
- Provides outstanding direct customer service to library patrons of all ages, especially children and families, assisting with their information, readers’ advisory, and circulation needs.
- Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including (but not limited to) organizing and re-shelving materials; routing information; recording statistics; performing basic maintenance and office duties.
- Assists and instructs library patrons in computer activities, including using the library’s catalog and databases, the Internet, children’s educational programs, and basic personal computing programs.
- Shelves library materials in accurate location by alphabetical, numerical, chronological or Dewey Decimal order and in a timely manner.
- Shares knowledge of programs, activities, and facilities of the Athens-Clarke County Library and all branches of the Athens Regional Library System with patrons.
- Create a welcoming and safe environment in the Teen Department; develop a positive relationship with teens who visit the library and encourage them to return.
- Lead afternoon and evening activities for teens, working to create an engaging and fun atmosphere during teen events.
- Develop attractive marketing materials (flyers, social media posts, etc.) to promote teen activities and events.
- Assist with the creation of engaging social media videos to promote the department’s programs and services.
- Monitor behavior of teen patrons at the library and uphold all library policies
- Help patrons of all ages with basic library tasks such as: finding library materials, using computers, printing/copying items, and getting answers to basic questions.
- Support daily department operations when needed, including organizing and re-shelving materials, creating relevant book displays, and performing general office duties.
- This position may occasionally be asked to manage and operate the Teen Department on nights or weekends, as needed.

- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for use with coworkers and the public.
- Ability to learn and use basic office equipment, such as computers, mobile devices, tablets, printers, scanners, copiers, and cash registers.
- Knowledge of teen literature and media preferred.
- Ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
- Ability to organize and shelve library materials quickly and efficiently.
- Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
