Position Summary

Athens Regional Library System is hiring a part-time, temporary position to work up to twelve hours weekly, for up to 12 weeks, in the Royston Library in Franklin County. This position reports to the Franklin County Libraries Branch Manager.

This position requires dependability, superb customer service performance, tact, and knowledge of library policies and procedures. The ability to start, finish, or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital. The job candidate must be able to adapt to changing work environment.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent is required; college courses and/or degree desirable. One year of customer service experience required, with library experience preferred.  Or, any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and duties and job assignments may be added or changed during the temporary period of employment.

  • Follows opening and closing procedures in order to maintain public library hours of operation.
  • Provides direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their information, circulation, programming, and readers’ advisory needs.
  • Accomplishes various functions relating to circulation and control of library materials and customer registration, including circulation of internal and external library loans of materials and resolving problems when appropriate.
  • Assists with collection maintenance through performing tasks such as emptying bookdrops, sorting, shelving, and checking materials in and out of the library.
  • Provides support in many areas of daily branch operations, including (but not limited to) accepting fees and fines; routing loans and information; performing basic office duties such as copying, filing, FAXing, and answering phones.
  • Records and reports required statistics.
  • Assists patrons with using automation systems, the Internet, and other resources in order to locate information and materials.
  • May be asked to work with other staff to plan, implement, and present public programs and classes for all ages and to create displays, exhibits, and bulletin boards.
  • Correctly completes monetary transactions with patrons regarding fines, fees, and purchases.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility

None.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills for upholding the library’s core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages as well as to co-workers.
  • Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with various computer applications and the automated library system.
  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS and branch policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
  • Aptitude for creative projects such displays, crafts, and decorations.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
