Position Summary
The Oconee County Libraries are hiring an individual who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver superior library services that engage the community and exceed expectations at our Bogart and Watkinsville locations. This position requires dependability, commitment to excellence, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library.
This position provides front-line services to patrons in the library, develops, promotes, and presents high-quality, literature-based programming for children, teens, and families. Creativity, high energy, and ability to present to a group are essential. This position reports directly to the Oconee County Librarian.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. At least one year’s experience working with the public is required, with library experience and experience working with children strongly preferred. Knowledge of children’s literature is required. A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered. Must have, or be able to obtain, and maintain, a valid Georgia driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
Essential Job Functions
The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature may be required as assigned and job assignments may change in the future.
- Provides outstanding direct customer service to library patrons of all ages, especially children, teens, and families, assisting with their information, readers’ advisory, and circulation needs.
- Develops and presents age appropriate literature-based programs at the library and in outreach locations within the county in order to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills and to promote use of the library and its materials.
- Works with the Branch Managers in planning, developing, promoting, implementing, and evaluating quality children’s and family programs, such as story times, puppet shows, storytelling concerts, introductory music and art experiences, and summer reading activities.
- Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including (but not limited to) accepting fees and fines, organizing and re-shelving materials; routing information; recording statistics; performing basic maintenance and office duties.
- Drives to deliver library programs and materials offsite as assigned.
- Must independently manage and operate the library in the absence of the Branch Manager on scheduled nights and weekends; opens and closes the library.
- Assists with collection maintenance through performing such tasks as selecting, processing, sorting, shelving, and weeding materials according to established guidelines.
- Helps create attractive and informative bulletin boards, displays, and other reader’s advisory materials for targeted age groups.
- Maintains and submits required reports, program advertising, publicity and marketing materials to the Branch Managers.
- Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to established procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directs day-to-day operations of the library in the absence of the Branch Manager, being responsible for opening, closing, and security of the library.
- Trains and oversees volunteers as assigned, including maintaining required reports.

- Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages as well as to co-workers.
- Skill in public speaking and program presentation techniques appropriate to the targeted audiences.
- Specialized knowledge of children’s, teen and adult literature, and library resources.
- Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS, BOG and WAT policies, procedures, and activities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with the public (especially children), co-workers, and supervisor.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established procedures and practices.
- Ability to remain calm under busy, stressful conditions.
- Skill in using and understanding personal computers, programs, and the Internet for performing required duties and in assisting patrons with common computer applications and techniques.
- Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities.
- Aptitude for creative projects such displays, crafts, and decorations.
- Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support.
- Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
- Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
