Overview
The Athens Regional Library System encourages parents and caregivers to give their young children a headstart on developing literacy skills by reading 1000 Books Before Kindergarten!
Reading helps build social and emotional skills, sparks creativity and imagination, promotes bonding, and helps kids do well overall in school. Take that motivation, open one book, and get started. And remember: 1,000 is just a number. The goal is to work reading aloud into your regular routine, and let the magic of stories do the rest.
How to Participate
- Who: Any child who hasn’t started kindergarten is encouraged to participate.
- Sign Up: Register your child in Beanstack to log your reading, earn badges, and get prizes. Paper logs are also available at your local branch.
- Log Your Reading: Any book you and your child read together counts toward the 1,000 books — yes, even the ones you read over and over again, and yes, even the books read at one of our library’s Storytimes!
- Have Fun: Read a book a day to your child, and you’ll reach your goal in no time.
The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten reading challenge is offered by each of our library branches.
