Message from the Director

UPDATED: September 20, 2020

message from the director
Dear Library User,
I am very pleased to announce that in addition to our current services, most county libraries will be moving to the next phase of the libraries re-opening plan.  Those libraries will be welcoming patrons back into our facilities for Grab and Go service beginning September 28, 2020.

Due to the recent spike in Coronavirus cases, the Athens-Clarke County libraries will not be participating in Grab and Go service at this time.  We will, however, continue the services that are currently being offered:  Extended curbside hours, computers by appointment, document delivery, reference chat, and passport services.  The active cases and infection rates in Athens-Clarke County will be reviewed weekly with the hope of opening for Grab and Go service in early October.  Please read the full Message from the Director here.

Resources That Promote Equity

current events resourcesThe Athens Regional Library System embraces diversity, inclusion, and social justice. These are a part of our organizational values and at the heart of our public services. We support the members of our communities who are in pain, those who are on a quest to educate themselves around the issues of race, and those wondering how to talk with children and young people about these issues. To help with those endeavors, we have developed the following list of resources. We will be adding to this list as the days go by. Much like the challenging events our communities have experienced over the last three months, the Library believes that we are in this together, and together we will see our way through.

Hello, my name is Jose Antonio Duran Ruiz, I'm from Mexico and I have lived in Athens for 3 years. ESL programs in Athens have been very important to me and have helped me so much. Classes at the Pinewoods Neighborhood library and at Redeemer Presbyterian Church helped me learn more English, make new friends, have better job opportunities, and I am now studying to pass the citizenship exam so I can become a United States citizen. I think that ESL programs are one of the most important things for immigrants in our community. To learn the language, learn about American culture, history, the community--it's all very important. And I am always very grateful for these programs in Athens!

Hello, My name is Teresa Alvarez. I am studying English. I want to mention that I have an excellent teacher that is helping me deal with this language which is a bit complicated. Remember that with patience and perseverance we could achieve many things. Remember our motto YES WE CAN !!!!!!!!! We need to learn this language to help our children in any problem they could have or just to improve ourselves.

We should participate in the programs the government offers which are available to all Hispanics to succeed; they are free, so we have no excuses. Study, enough said! I leave you a big hug (YES WE CAN).

Hello: My name is María Rogel. I want to talk about the benefits of learning to speak English. Many people say "oh well, I only speak Spanish and if you want to understand me, you learn my language." But they do not realize how bad it is not able to speak or understand because English it is used everywhere at the doctor, shop, school, etc.

Personally, I am a fulfilled person when I do my things without assistance. You could say, "Ok, someone help me." But it's ugly when people have no time to help you, you know, not everyone is available when you need translation.

Another important point is the example that we give to our children. You know that they are a reflection of us. Learn English and you will see that many doors will open.

When I came to the United States I could not speak English. Then I heard about the Even Start program, which offered English classes with child care, which was perfect because the program not only taught English but it also gave you lessons on how to be better parents. After two years of study I received my graduation certificate from the program. You have no idea how much it has helped me through these years with my children's school, at work and much more, like being able to take the GED study. Now I am very happy to help people serving as a volunteer to translate at school conferences and many other places.

Do not wait any longer! Go ahead and make the decision to learn English! You will see all the opportunities you will have with the knowledge of the language of this country.

**PLEASE NOTE: Classes are no longer available with the Even Start Program, but there are multiple programs serving ESL students. Please see our website at www.athensliteracy.org for a complete list of ESL class providers.**
