Image of a solar eclipse.

Thursday, July 27, 2017, 5:00 p.m.

Solar eclipses have fascinated mankind for millennia. Through finally understanding the phenomena they have been utilized for scientific investigation. This talk will examine (through photographs, paintings and postage stamps from around the world) how eclipses have changed history from the Chaldeans and Babylonians to the Greeks, the Middle Ages and by modern scientific study. Featured will be how solar eclipses stopped or affected wars, caused the death of kings and break up of empires, resulted in a run on the confessional, the discovery of a new element and proved Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Details of this year’s Aug. 21 total solar eclipse will be presented including where to go to see totality in Northeast Georgia and how to safely view (with Solar Eclipse Glasses or projection) and photograph the eclipse.

Dr. Maurice Snook will present this free program, which is best for adults.
