Position Summary

Athens Regional Library System, Georgia Public Library of the Year 2017, has an immediate opening for a Temporary Teen Area Manager for the Athens-Clarke County Library (A-CCL). The System will hire a competent, experienced, responsible individual who will manage the daily operations and activities of A-CCL Teen Area. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Public Services.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent, and college degree are required. At least three years’ experience working with the public is required, with experience working with teenagers strongly preferred. Or, equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Bilingual Skills (English-Spanish) are preferred, though not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned.

  • Provides direct customer service to library patrons of all ages, with a specific emphasis on teens and young adults.
  • Oversees, monitors, and directly addresses activities and behavior of teen patrons at the library.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement.
  • Monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
  • Must independently manage and operate Teen Area, including following established opening and closing procedures.
  • Assists library patrons with computer activities.
  • Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including basic department maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials; performing basic office duties.
  • Supervises A-CCL Teen Area staff and volunteers to ensure ongoing service and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Under guidance and approval of Assistant Director for Public Services, plans and maintains daily and monthly staff schedules; submits timesheets.
  • Prioritizes and assigns work in the Teen Area.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working with teenagers.
  • Ability to handle a busy public service desk and to remain calm under busy, stressful conditions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Ability to confidently and effectively address behavior issues as they arise.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages, and especially to teens.
  • Ability to lead an effective work team to promote a positive attitude in staff.
  • Cultural competence and ability to provide an inclusive and respectful environment in a diverse setting.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to answer questions and explain procedures and policies.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
  • Physical ability to regularly operate a variety of 21st century library machinery and equipment; must be able move or carry objects or materials, push loaded book carts, and to lift and place materials above head.  Must be able to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Light Work.
