Position Summary

The Teen Services department of the Athens-Clarke County Library has an immediate opening for a part-time assistant. This active, vibrant sector of the library is looking for a creative and enthusiastic team player who:

  • enjoys working with the public, especially teenagers;
  • is knowledgeable about technology;
  • is enthusiastic about planning and hosting programs for teens.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. At least one year experience working with public is required, with library experience and experience working with the teenage population preferred.

A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.

Bilingual skills preferred.

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments may change in the future.

  • Provides direct customer assistance to patrons of all ages.
  • Assists library patrons with computer activities, including catalog, database, Internet searching, and printing.
  • Works with the other departmental staff to coordinate, create, and present age-appropriate programs for teens.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
  • Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including basic department maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials; performing basic office duties.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages.
  • Aptitude for creative projects such as displays, crafts, and decorations.
  • Ability to keep up-to-date with popular culture and technological advances that interest teens.
  • Ability to handle a busy public service desk.
  • Ability to remain calm under busy, stressful conditions.
  • Ability to work independently within established guidelines, and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with people with tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff.
  • Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with various computer applications.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize assignments and activities.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures, including operating building security systems.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Physical ability to move or carry objects or materials.  Must be able move or carry objects or materials.  Must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently.  Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Medium work.
