Position Summary

Athens Regional Library System, Georgia Public Library of the Year 2017, is hiring a Library Assistant for the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center. We seek an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible individual who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver quality library services that engage the community and exceed expectations.

This position provides front-line services to patrons of all ages, especially children, performs other routine, supportive duties including shelving library materials, and is responsible for daily cleaning and basic maintenance of the facility. This position requires dependability, commitment to excellence, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library. This position reports to Pinewoods’ Branch Supervisor.

Daytime and evening hours will be required for the guaranteed 12/hrs/wk; additional hours up to 19 in one week may sometimes be adjusted in order to fill-in as a substitute for other library staff. See www.athenslibrary.org/pinewoods for hours of operation.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Must be fluent in both English and Spanish. Or, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and duties and job assignments and schedule may be changed in the future.

  • Cleans interior and exterior of the library as directed by the Branch Supervisor (includes using cleansers for cleaning rest rooms; dusting and sanitizing surfaces; cleaning and/or vacuuming floors, porches and sidewalks; litter and trash collection; setting up furniture for events; etc.) and performs basic light maintenance duties.
  • Keeps Branch Supervisor apprised of cleaning and other supply needs.
  • Works with the Branch Supervisor to maintain orderliness during community classes and programs.
  • Provides direct customer service to library patrons, including the following: locating information; materials circulation; correctly completing monetary transactions regarding fines, fees, and purchases; routing loans and information; performing basic office duties such as copying, filing, FAXing, and answering phones.
  • Provides support in many areas of daily branch operations, including opening and closing procedures in order to maintain public library hours of operation.
  • Assists with collection maintenance through performing tasks such as emptying bookdrops, sorting, shelving, and checking materials in and out of the library.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures; monitors behavior of patrons.
  • Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
  • Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.
  • No supervisory or management responsibilities at this time.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fluency in oral and written Spanish and English.
  • Skill in upholding the library’s core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages as well as to co-workers.
  • Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with various computer applications and the automated library system.
  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS and branch policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Ability to handle a busy public service desk and to address behavior issues; ability to remain calm under busy, stressful conditions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
  • Ability to be available on an on-call basis to accept short-term assignments.
  • Ability to maintain predictable and punctual attendance, sometimes on short notice.
  • Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment. Physical ability to regularly operate a variety of machinery and equipment including library equipment and vacuum cleaner and other cleaning equipment; must be able move or carry objects or materials and to lift and place materials above head; must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
