Part-time Branch Library Assistant - Winterville Library

Salary: $8.00 per hour; without benefits
Hours: 19 hours per week
Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 3-7pm; Wednesday 9am-12pm; Saturday 10am-2pm
Requirements: One year customer service experience, preferably in a library setting.
Bilingual Spanish skills preferred.

Purpose & Scope
This part-time position provides front-line services to patrons in the library, performs other supportive duties and develops and presents library programs for the public. This position requires dependability, tact, knowledge of library policies and procedures, independent judgment, a positive customer service attitude, and skill in program presentation. The ability to start, finish, or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital. Creativity, high energy, and awareness of the world are also essential. Position reports to the Branch Manager.
Minimum Training & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. At least one year experience working with public is required, with library experience preferred. Or, any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and job assignments and work schedule are subject to change in the future.
- Provides direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their information, readers’ advisory, and circulation needs
- Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including (but not limited to) opening and closing the library; basic facility maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials; accepting fees and fines; routing holds, loans and information; materials processing; recording statistics; performing basic office duties
- Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures
- Assists and instructs library patrons in computer activities, including using the library’s catalog and databases, the Internet, and basic personal computing programs
- Develops, promotes, and implements library programs, communicating all plans and program feedback to Branch Manager
- Creates attractive and informative bulletin boards and displays
- Prepares print and online notices, flyers, monthly calendars, and other publicity information for approval by Branch Manager
- Shares information and coordinates activities with other ARLS departments and specialists
- Browses library literature, searches Galileo databases, and becomes otherwise familiar with library materials
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages, as well as to co-workers
- Skill in public speaking and program presentation techniques appropriate to the targeted audiences
- Knowledge of children’s, teen, and adult literature
- Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS and branch policies, procedures, and activities
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with the public, co-workers and supervisor
- Skill in using and understanding personal computers, programs, and the Internet for performing required duties and in assisting patrons with common computer applications and techniques
- Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities
- Aptitude for creative projects such displays, crafts, decorations, and publicity
- Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures
- Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally
- Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance
- Physical requirements: Position requires full use of sight, hearing, speech, arms, hands, legs and feet; requires sitting, standing and walking; bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and lifting a minimum of 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally. Requires ability to push carts full of books to other parts of the building. Physical ability to move or carry objects or materials; physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Medium work.
