Librarian - Information Services - Athens-Clarke County Library

The Athens-Clarke County Library is hiring an entry-level librarian to join our Information Services team. The right candidate will be energetic, creative and tech-savvy with a passion for providing exceptional customer service.

Full-Time Position with benefits
Salary: $13 per hour
Hours: 40 per week, and requires some nights and weekends
Bilingual Skills (English-Spanish) preferred

Minimum Training & Experience

This position requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited university or current enrollment in an ALA-accredited MLS program with requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position; or a bachelor's degree and two years' public library experience, or any combination of education, training and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.

Previous public library reference experience and bi-lingual ability (English-Spanish) is preferred but not required.

Purpose and Scope

This position works in the Information Services department. It requires excellent customer service skills, knowledge of print and online resources to assist library patrons with their information needs, and technical skills to assist patrons using our computer lab. The person in this job may serve as a library representative on local community organizations. This position also acts as a U.S. Passport Acceptance Agent. Reports to Assistant Director of Public Services.

Essential Functions

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned, and job assignments and work schedule are subject to change in the future.

  1. Provides reference services to library patrons in person, by telephone or online
  2. Provides computer assistance to patrons.
  3. Participates in the planning and implementation of adult programs.
  4. Participates in the planning and development of book displays, reader’s advisory guides, pathfinders, resource lists and other finding aids
  5. Maintains specific collection areas by recommending materials in assigned section.
  6. Represents the library and library interests within the community.
  7. Handles and executes applications for U.S. Passports.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Knowledge of reference sources, both in print and online
  2. Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages.
  3. Knowledge of general library principles and philosophy
  4. Knowledge of library practices and of ARLS policies, procedures and activities.
  5. Knowledge of PINES library catalog and library subscription databases
  6. Ability to answer questions, explain procedures and enforce policies.
  7. Ability to employ appropriate reference interview techniques to accurately determine users’ information needs.
  8. Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
  9. Ability to keep up-to-date on technology trends and developments, and to learn new technologies in a timely manner
  10. Ability to learn U.S. Passport execution procedures and to clearly communicate those policies and requirements
  11. Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance
  12. Knowledge of readers advisory resources
  13. Ability to use, understand and assist patrons with computer applications
