We seek an engaged and collaborative leader who shares our vision and our values of public service to become our Assistant Director of Regional Services and Outreach.  The person in this position reports to the Executive Director and works alongside a highly collaborative and visionary senior leadership team, sharing responsibility for the overall direction and success of the Athens Regional Libraries. The Assistant Director leads the 10 Branch Managers and Supervisors of the ARLS Libraries.  We seek a person who will inspire, empower, and lead the branch staff in applying their expertise, unique skills, and interests in fulfilling the operational and strategic direction of the Library System.   

Minimum Training and Experience

Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited institution, with at least five years of progressively responsible library supervisory, customer service, planning, and managerial experience.  State of Georgia certification for Librarianship, Librarian grade 5B, is required.  Must have, or be able to obtain and maintain, a valid Georgia driver’s license. 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

The Athens Regional Library System is in search of a leader who will emphasize our customer-centered culture. The following duties are broad examples of the priority expectations for this key management position.

  • Oversee, plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the overall work, projects, programs, and activities of branch services for the Region.
  • Assess, develop, and implement various workflows and the creation of operational systems towards the advancement of organizational efficiency.
  • Shape and support exceptional access to services provided at 10 library locations, through consistent policies and procedures in circulation, reference, professional development, and training. 
  • Provide leadership in the development of the Libraries’ Strategic Direction and branch tactical plans.
  • Engage in and support Region-wide initiatives working closely with stakeholders.
  • Nurture long-term collaborations and develop new partnerships with organizations whose vision and values are in alignment with the Libraries’ priorities.
  • Work with the community through outreach and communication, represent the Libraries’ vision, priorities, and expertise in compelling and inspiring ways, and seek input and support from a diverse and inclusive range of community members.
  • Attend local board meetings and present reports as required. Serve as communication liaison between local Boards of Trustees, Friends groups, and Library Administration.
  • Assist in developing long-range plans for branch and Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services (GLASS), including staff needs and budgetary requirements and monitoring.
  • Respond to inquiries from public regarding issues unresolved at the primary level; resolve issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise branches through direct supervision and review of Branch Managers.  Provide support and indirect supervision of other staff at branches, including monitoring training, setting expectations, coaching, and disciplinary actions.
  • Supervise outreach personnel in the form of Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services (GLASS).
  • Collaborate in recruitment, selection, and training of Branch Managers and branch staff; assess performance for assigned staff. Make hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Conduct staff meetings on a regular basis; keep assigned staff informed of library policies and procedures.

  • Ability to provide external and internal service that is inclusive, respectful, committed to excellence, and welcoming, and that supports the community and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of personnel management and supervision. Ability to interpret and administer policies, procedures, plans, and activities and to monitor performance against measured, established goals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with library stakeholders; ability to assemble information and make written and oral reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all library units to improve library service delivery to the public.
  • Skill in developing community contacts and partnerships. Skill in community analysis.
  • Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills; ability to use independent judgment and discretion, including in emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate a variety of 21st century machinery, equipment, technology, and software.
  • Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment. Must be able move or carry objects or materials and to lift and place materials above head; must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
