Purpose and Scope

It is through our values we provide an atmosphere and work environment that is inclusive, supportive of our community, respectful, committed to excellence and welcoming. Athens Regional Library System is seeking a part-time Public Information/Digital Media Intern for the Athens-Clarke County Library. This is a part-time, paid position of 15 hours per week, to end no later than September 1, 2021, with an opportunity to renew. 

Remote work eligible; Schedule will be coordinated with classes (if applicable), up to 15 hours per week, with work occurring Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Preference will be given to candidates completing the internship for course credit, and accommodations can be made per the requirements of the course. Second and third year students with a focus in public relations, web design, or digital media experience are strongly encouraged to apply. 

We seek an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible individual who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver quality library services that engage the community and exceed expectations. This position reports directly to the Digital Media Librarian. The successful candidate will gain experience in creating and managing accessible content in a Content Management System (CMS) website, work with current and emerging technologies, as well as public relations media production, such as graphic design, photography, video editing, among others. Public relations media work may be assigned by the Public Information Officer or others. Hours will be split between web and PR work. 

Minimum Training and Experience 

High school diploma or equivalent required, with some digital media, web design, marketing, or instructional design coursework preferred, or any combination of education, training and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. Additional training will be provided. 

Essential Functions and Experiences

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned, and job assignments and work schedule are subject to change during the internship.

  • Follows established workflows to assist in updating web content including calendars, blog posts, digital signage, Youtube videos, or other social media, as needed. 
  • Assists in reviewing and updating webpages to ensure that content stays current. 
  • Edits and/or creates promotional videos and/or social media content.  
  • Creates content that meets basic media accessibility requirements and assists in efforts to bring existing content up to date. 
  • May create or identify content for instructional training or provide instruction/training to support library projects including technology training/education for patrons. 
  • Records video or photographs library events or other library activities, as needed.
  • May assist in in-person technology or promotional events, as applicable. 
  • Communicates and works cooperatively with staff in all departments of the library.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Proficiency with Wordpress or other CMS websites.
  • Proficiency with video editing software such as Premiere or FinalCutPro.
  • Ability to work with people with tact, patience, and courtesy and exercise excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and to learn new technologies quickly. 
  • Ability to maintain a regular schedule with occasional changes in schedule for select special events. 
  • Ability to work on routine, repetitive tasks with an attention to detail. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, ensuring that work is prioritized appropriately and completed in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
  • Knowledge of the library’s core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations providing inclusive, welcoming culturally competent services.
  • Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment.
  • Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
