The Athens Regional Library System is hiring a Library Assistant for the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center. The System will hire an experienced, responsible, creative, and enthusiastic individual who embraces and thrives in an active, fast-paced, culturally diverse environment.

This position provides front-line services to patrons of all ages, especially children, performs other routine, supportive duties including shelving library materials, and is responsible for daily cleaning and basic maintenance of the facility.  This position requires dependability, commitment to excellence, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library. This position reports to Pinewoods’ Branch Manager. This position develops, organizes & presents library programs, activities, & training sessions for children & adults. This position requires dependability, tact, knowledge of library policies & procedures, & significant independent judgment.  Bilingual (Spanish & English) communication skills are required.  This position reports directly to the Pinewoods Branch Manager.

Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent & at least one year college required, with college degree preferred.  Experience working with children required.  Or, any equivalent combination of education, training & experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills & abilities for the position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature may be required & assigned, & job assignments may change in the future.

  • Works with the Branch Manager to plan & implement community classes & programs.
  • Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including opening & closing the library, basic facility cleaning & maintenance, organizing & re-shelving materials, accepting fees & fines, routing library materials & information, & performing basic office duties such as copying, filing, FAXing, & answering telephones. Must be able to answer the phone in Spanish and in English.
  • Provides customer service to library patrons, assisting with information & circulation needs.
  • Organizes & leads activities, programs, story times, & tutoring sessions for children.
  • Develops & presents age appropriate literacy activities, especially for children.
  • Assists library patrons with computer activities.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Code of Ethics as stated in the Personnel Policy.
  • Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
  • Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities  

  • May direct operations of the library in the absence of the Manager, being responsible for opening, closing, & security of the library.
  • Trains & oversees library volunteers, including filing reports.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Effective communication & interpersonal skills & ability to communicate successfully with patrons who speak Spanish &/or English
  • Ability to work with patrons of all ages, but especially with children 
  • Personal computer proficiency & the ability to use, understand, & assist patrons with computer applications
  • Skill in program presentation techniques appropriate to targeted audiences
  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles & practices & application of ARLS & branch policies, procedures & activities
  • Knowledge of all normal & emergency library building procedures
  • Organizational skills & the ability to plan & prioritize assignments & activities
  • Knowledge of basic office principles & skill in performing office support
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, & punctual attendance, sometimes with short notice.
  • Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
