Athens Regional Library System is hiring a Library Assistant: Program Specialist for the Royston Branch of the Franklin County Libraries. The System will hire an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible individual who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver quality library services that engage the community and exceed expectations. 

This position works as part of the library’s team to provide front-line library and computer services to patrons and is responsible for working with other library staff to plan, market, conduct, and facilitate special programs and training events for adults, teens, and families at the Royston Library. This position requires dependability, commitment to excellence, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library. This position reports to the Branch Manager of the Franklin County Libraries.


Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required, with college degree preferred. At least one year’s experience working with the public is required, with library experience preferred. Or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and job assignments may change in the future, including night and weekend work assignments.

  • Provides outstanding direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their library questions and activities, and information, readers’ advisory, and technology needs.
  • Subject to Branch Manager’s guidance and approval, designs, promotes, and presents programs and introductory information technology classes and tutorials for the public on a variety of computer skills and other topics. 
  • Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including the following: organizing and re-shelving materials; accepting fees and fines; routing holds, loans, and information; materials processing; basic facility maintenance; meeting room use; performing basic office duties including answering telephones.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
  • Assists with collection maintenance through performing tasks such as emptying bookdrops, sorting, shelving, and checking materials in and out of the library.
  • Correctly completes monetary transactions with patrons regarding fines, fees, and purchases.
  • May train and oversee library volunteers as assigned.
  • Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
  • Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills for upholding the library’s core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
  • Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, assist, and train patrons with various computer applications and the automated library system; knowledge of current social media applications.
  • Ability to prepare training and program plans and materials and skill in training and program presentation.
  • Aptitude for creative projects such displays and publicity.
  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles, practices, and application of ARLS, Royston Library, and PINES policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff; ability to answer questions and explain procedures and policies.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.  
  • Physical demand requirements are those of Medium Work.
