Are you keeping a journal of your experiences during the coronavirus pandemic?share your story Did you post a photo on social media of empty shelves at the grocery store? Whether you’re writing in an old school diary or recording voice memos, everyone's experience is unique. The Heritage Room at Athens-Clarke County Library wants to help preserve our community’s story of this unprecedented time in our collective history. Our goal is to collect stories and vignettes of community members’ daily lives in an archive to share with future students, historians and researchers.


We are interested in stories from everyday people. We want to know how you are keeping in touch with your friends and family during this time of social distancing, along with the challenges of working from home with no childcare. No story is too small! How you collect your thoughts is up to you: write in a journal, take photos or videos, record voice memos or even save social media posts. Position Summary

The purpose of this job is to provide specialized assistance in the processing of library materials for the Athens Regional Library System.  Duties include but are not limited to making books shelf-ready by physically processing books and other library materials for ARLS collections.  

The ideal candidate must be well-organized, detailed-oriented, dependable with good customer service skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment; must be adaptable to varying job assignments.  The ability to start, finish, or pick up work projects at various points is vital. This position reports to the Collection Management Supervisor.. 

Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required; college courses and/or degree desirable. Two years of customer service experience with library experience preferred; or, any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  

Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments may change in the future.

  • Processes and routes books, CDs, DVDs, and other library materials by covering, placing labels, RFID tagging, etc., according to prescribed processes. 
  • Uses computer and other office equipment in the performance of duties (creates book plates, spine labels, DVD graphics, works in Evergreen ILS).
  • Repairs books as needed.
  • Monitors materials processing supplies for ACCL and branches.  Confers with supervisor to manage ordering of materials processing supplies. Communicates with branch staff about supply needs.
  • Communicates with staff & patrons on phone and via email, answering questions and forwarding calls, as necessary.
  • Assists Collection Development Librarian and Collection Management Supervisor with quality control of outsourced materials.
  • Assists with department workflow as needed and directed. 
  • Assists with collection maintenance processes, including holdings maintenance and weeding.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Code of Ethics as stated in the Personnel Policy
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Library System as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position.
  • Personal computer proficiency; ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments; ability to adapt to new technologies. 
  • Ability to use plan, organize and/or prioritize daily tasks and work activities; ability to work independently toward established goals.
  • Skill in supply management.
  • Knowledge of and skill in delivering excellent external and internal customer service.
  • Ability and desire to work with details in an efficient and accurate manner.
  • Ability to answer questions and to explain procedures to co-workers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with library staff and the general public.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all library units; ability to work in a pleasant, professional and effective manner with patrons, staff, coworkers, other departments of the library.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Physical ability to regularly operate a variety of 21st century library machinery and equipment; must be able move or carry objects or materials and to lift and place materials above head; must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
