We seek an engaged and collaborative leader who shares our vision and values of public service to become our Assistant Director for Organizational Development.  The person in this position reports to the Executive Director and works alongside a highly collaborative and visionary senior leadership team, sharing responsibility for the overall direction and success of the Athens Regional Libraries. We seek a person who will inspire, empower, and lead staff in applying their expertise, unique skills, and interests in fulfilling the operational and strategic direction of the Library System.  This position will have a unique opportunity to help shape the development and growth of the library and to re-imagine the strategic goals of the library going forward.

The purpose of this job is to assist the Executive Director in the administration and implementation of day-to-day operations of, and special projects for, ARLS.  Specific areas of responsibility currently include the following: coordination of Regional Human Resource activities, policies and records; staff development; grants; awards; and library evaluation and statistics.

Minimum Training and Experience

Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution, with five years of professional library experience with progressively responsible administrative level experience.  Human Resources and successful grant writing experience strongly preferred. State of Georgia certification for Librarianship, Librarian Grade 5B, is required. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Athens Regional Library System is in search of a leader who will emphasize our customer-centered culture. The following duties are broad examples of the priority expectations for this key management position.

  • Assists Executive Director in administering and directing assigned areas of ARLS services.
  • Administers library operations in the absence of the Director.
  • Demonstrates support for equity, diversity, inclusiveness and maintains a respectful, positive work environment.
  • Coordinates and supervises staff services and human relations functions for the Regional Library.
  • Shapes and supports exceptional library services, through the development of consistent policies and procedures, professional development, and training.
  • Serves as Grants Coordinator for ARLS.
  • Coordinates research data and library assessment for the Region; fosters accountability, transparency, and data-informed approaches to achieving strategic objectives.
  • Provides leadership in the development of the Libraries’ Strategic Direction and tactical plans.
  • Assesses, develops, and implements various workflows and the creation of operational systems towards the advancement of organizational efficiency.
  • Nurtures long-term collaborations and develops new partnerships with organizations whose vision and values are in alignment with the Libraries’ priorities.
  • Represents the Libraries’ vision, priorities, and expertise in the community; seeks partnerships from a diverse and inclusive range of community members.
  • Maintains required professional certifications, meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.
  • Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
  • Oversees assigned staff, including supervising, training, performance appraisal and recognition, and professional development; makes hiring and disciplinary recommendations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of grant-seeking, applications, and implementation; grant writing experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide external and internal service that is inclusive, respectful, committed to excellence, and welcoming, and that supports the community and co-workers.
  • Extensive knowledge of librarianship, of library grant and human resources management, and of administrative practices.
  • Strong ability to operate as part of administrative team in all daily activities, problem solving, and dealing with unique situations throughout ARLS.
  • Extensive knowledge of human resources and personnel concepts and techniques in a broad range of areas such as compensation, benefits, training, recruitment, selection, risk management, and loss control.
  • Skill in employee counseling and in discussing confidential, difficult, and sometimes personal, issues with ARLS employees at all levels.
  • Skill in developing and training staff and in devising and monitoring training plans.
  • Demonstrable skills and abilities in business acumen; budgeting; consultation; critical evaluation; cultural competence; leadership; ethical practice; attention to detail.
  • Skill in gathering and interpreting data from many sources for analyzing demographics; strong analytical, negotiating, problem solving, and proofreading skills.
  • Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills; ability to use independent judgment and discretion, including in emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate a variety of 21st century machinery, equipment, technology, and software; requires talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions; involves sitting most of the time, but requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are those of Light Work.
