  • Any additional hours are frequently (but not always) in the afternoons or evening.

Purpose and Scope

Athens Regional Library System is hiring an individual for the Athens-Clarke County Library Circulation Department who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver quality library services that engage the community and exceed expectations.


This position works as part of the Circulation Team to provide front-line materials circulation services to patrons in the library and performs other routine, supportive duties. This part-time position works 8 to 19 hours weekly as a substitute in all branches of the Athens-Clarke County Libraries (East Athens, Lay Park, Pinewoods, and Winterville), or at the main library on Baxter Street. There is potential for up to 19 hours of work during any given week, but only eight are guaranteed. Efforts are made to schedule substitute assignments in advance; however, some assignments will be on an on-call basis, so much flexibility is required. 


This position requires dependability, commitment to excellence, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library. The ability to start, finish or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital, as is the ability to work on short notice, and the ability to work well with children. This position reports to the Regional Circulation
Coordinator.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent is required; college course and/or degree desirable. Two years of customer service experience is required, with library experience preferred. Or, any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and duties and job assignments may be added or changed in the future.

  • Follows opening and closing procedures in order to maintain public library hours of operation.
  • Provides direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their information, circulation, programming, and readers’ advisory needs.
  • Assists patrons with using automation systems, the Internet, and other resources in order to locate information and materials.

Job Description

  • Accomplishes various functions relating to circulation and control of library materials and customer registration, including circulation of internal and external library loans of materials and resolving problems when appropriate.
  • Provides support in many areas of daily branch operations, including (but not limited to) accepting fees and fines; routing loans and information; performing basic office duties such as copying, filing, FAXing, and answering phones.
  • Records and reports required statistics.
  • Assists with collection maintenance through performing tasks such as emptying bookdrops, sorting, shelving, and checking materials in and out of the library.
  • Correctly completes monetary transactions with patrons regarding fines, fees, and purchases.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; explains policies and procedures to patrons.
  • Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
  • Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility 

This position may be responsible for the supervision and operations of the branch and monitoring of volunteers.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Knowledge and skills for upholding the library’s core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing excellent customer service to patrons of all ages as well as to co-workers.
  • Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with various computer applications and the automated library system.
  • Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS and branch policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff.
  • Ability to work effectively with patrons of all ages with tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Knowledge of children’s, teen, and adult literature.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment. Physical ability to regularly operate a variety of 21st century library machinery and equipment; must be able move or carry objects or materials and to lift and place materials above head; must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
