Position Summary

Athens Regional Library System is hiring a Shelver/Desk Assistant to work in the Athens-Clarke County Library. We seek an enthusiastic, flexible individual who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver quality library services that engage the community and exceed expectations.

This position primarily shelves library materials in the correct order, shelf-reads to maintain order, and rearranges or shifts the collection as required, so attention to detail is essential. The position also requires duty at the Information  Services and Heritage Room public service desks, providing reference and computer assistance to library patrons. Excellent customer service skills, including approachability, patience, and tactfulness are required. Position requires limited independent judgment and works under the supervision of the Regional Circulation Coordinator.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required, with some post-secondary education preferred.  Library-related work experience is preferred. A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments and schedules may change in the future.

  • Shelves library materials in accurate location by alphabetical, numerical, chronological or Dewey Decimal order and in a timely manner.
  • Performs shelf reading to locate mis-shelved materials and to maintain accurate order of materials; straightens shelves and other assigned areas.
  • Shifts materials on shelves in the collection as needed and re-stocks library displays with appropriate materials.
  • Provides direct customer service to library patrons of all ages, communicating with them to assist their information, readers' advisory, computer, and circulatoin needs; assists patrons in person and on the phone on Saturdays at Information Services and Heritage Room public desks.
  • Shares knowledge of programs, activities, and facilities of the Athens-Clarke County Library and all branches of the Athens Regional Library System with patrons.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to established procedures.
  • Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
  • Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.
  • No supervisory responsibilities at this time.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Ability to see, read, and understand titles, authors, call numbers, barcode numbers and dates.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the PINES online library catalog and patron database.
    • Ability to work independently and to accomplish shelving assignments with minimal direct supervision.
    • Knowledge of collection layout and organization.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions; effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with the public, co-workers, and supervisor.
    • Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages, as well as to co-workers; ability to work cooperatively with patrons and library staff.
    • Ability to handle a busy public service desk and to remain calm under demanding, stressful conditions; ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established procedures and practices.
    • Ability to use, understand and assist patrons with computer applications.
    • Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of library policies, procedures, and activities; ability to answer questions and explain library procedures and policies. 
    • Knowledge of programs, activities, and facilities of the Athens Regional Library System.
    • Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support and library resources support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
    • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
    • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
    • Work performed is physical in nature and involves sufficient physical strength and stamina to regularly perform the following work:
      • Frequent reaching, kneeling, crawling, crouching, squatting, bending, and twisting to shelve materials from floor level to above head; occasional climbing and balancing to use step stools, ladders, and climb stairs;
      • Constant light grasp to prepare materials for checkout and patron use, frequent firm grasp, pinching/fine motor abilities to prepare materials/books, and reaching overhead to stock books;
      • Constant near acuity to read computer screens, and book and shelving labels;
      • Frequent hearing to communicate with public and staff; in person and via telephone;
      • Occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds from ground to waist to move materials, occasional carrying of up to 40 pounds 200 feet to move materials;
      • Frequent pushing and/or pulling of up to 150 pounds of materials on rolling cart throughout multi-level public use library.
      • Ability to regularly operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computer, telephone, copiers, printers, step stools, and audio/visual equipment;
      • Constant standing and walking throughout a multi-level public library facility;
      • Occasional sitting and standing in one area to perform customer service.
      • Work is normally performed indoors in a public library setting. This position involves public contact.
      • Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
